D.C. and Sacramento Legislative Recap

May is a busy month for REALTOR® advocacy!

Every year REALTORS® head to Sacramento and Washington D.C. to represent the dream of homeownership to our state and federal representatives. This legislative marathon starts in early May when REALTORS® from all over California descend upon Sacramento to lobby our state legislature. Every year C.A.R holds their “Legislative Day” where REALTORS® like you head to the state capitol and discuss key “hot issues” with your local legislators to lobby their stance on these issues.

This year our new Governor, Gavin Newsom, kicked the day off by addressing a room full of 3000+ REALTORS® by letting them know that he was committed to his aggressive plans to combat the housing crisis and much needed CEQA reform. After the rally, it was off to the state capitol where our REALTOR® brothers and sisters filled the offices of Assembly and Senate members to have conversations about our key issues. After we filled the halls of the capitol, it was off to the Capitol Reception where REALTOR® members got to mix and mingle with their representatives as well as network with other real estate pro’s!

Next up..Washington D.C!

For those that have not been to N.A.R.’s Legislative Meetings and Trade EXPO, do yourself a favor and try to make it to next years. This year was very special because not only did we get meetings with all of our representatives nationwide, President Trump addressed a packed room of REALTORS® about just how valuable we are to the housing industry. Regardless of your political leanings, that fact that all our representatives and a sitting president took time out to meet with our REALTOR® family is HUGE. This goes to show just how important real estate is to the economy, our way of life and just how powerful our voice of 1.3 million N.A.R. members truly is.

This year’s hill visits were especially productive, with your local North County Representatives Duncan Hunter and Mike Levin both supporting our REALTOR causes as well as addressing the need to solve the housing crisis we have in San Diego. Just like in Sacramento, these meetings are such a powerful way to show how dedicated REALTORS® are to protecting property rights and homeownership.

After coming back from this legislative marathon, it’s quite obvious how important REALTORS® are in all aspects of advocacy. Whether it be at a city council meeting, planning commission meeting or a congressional hearing, you are the voice for real estate and you are the only line of defense for homeowners. Real estate and politics go hand in hand, which is why if you ever want to get involved in REALTOR® advocacy with NSDCAR and help protect homeownership in North County, I’d love to hear from you.
